If your trim material isn't functioning properly in the smithing table, try holding the item in your main hand first. Existing items prior to version 2.7 don't have the "provides trim material" component and will need to be modified. For example: copy "/trigger modify\_armadillo\_scute" to modify an armadillo scute or "/trigger modify\_lava\_bucket" to modify a lava bucket
